Montgomery County

Montgomery County, one of the fastest growing counties in the nation, is located about 45 minutes northwest of Nashville. Clarksville, the county seat and the only incorporated city in the county, sits on the banks of the Cumberland River. In 2019, Clarksville topped Money Magazine’s list of the best places to live in the United States due to the city’s economy and reasonable cost of living. Visitors to downtown Clarksville will find a compact and vibrant city core with restaurants, shops, art, and entertainment, with few reminders of the F3 tornado that ripped apart a five block area of downtown in January 1999 or the “100 year flood” in 2010 when the Cumberland River rose to an all-time record crest.

Montgomery County’s 544 square miles encompass rich farmland, growing industrial sites, numerous state and local parks, historic sites, playgrounds, and trails. A broad variety of housing options in both suburban and rural settings attracts new residents to the county every day.

From pre-K through doctorate degrees, Montgomery County offers world-class educational opportunities through the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System, K-12 private schools, and public and private postsecondary institutions. The median age of Montgomery County’s more than 200,000 residents is 30.7 years, the youngest in Tennessee.

Montgomery County is home to Austin Peay State University, one of Tennessee’s fastest growing universities; industries including Google, Hankook Tire, Trane, LG, and Bridgestone Metalpha; and Fort Campbell Army Post, one of America’s largest military installations.

The Leadership Middle Tennessee visit to Montgomery County focuses on Fort Campbell and the impact of the military on the economy of the Middle Tennessee region. The Montgomery County session incorporates an additional day so class members can visit the US Army installation and gain an appreciation of military life by interacting with the military service members and civilians assigned to the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), and 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne). For many LMT class members, the opportunity to rappel at the Air Assault School is a unique challenge and one of the highlights of the day.
